Full/Half-Width Converter by Yoshinya

Reusing the copy from an existing site, only to find ABC next to ABC, 123 next to 123 and カタカナ next to カタカナ? Hunting them down page by page, by eye, is nobody’s idea of a good afternoon. Full/Half-Width Converter by Yoshinya unifies them in one pass. Choose a direction for letters and digits, katakana, symbols and spaces separately — half-width letters and full-width katakana are already set — and every change is highlighted, so you can check it before you copy. The text you paste is never sent to a server, so unpublished copy and client material stay on your machine.

Guide

How to use the tool

  1. Paste your text under ① Paste your text. The result updates as you type.
  2. Under ② Choose the rules, pick a direction for each kind of character. The defaults — half-width letters and digits, full-width katakana — are the usual house style for Japanese web copy.
  3. Type anything that should stay as it is into Characters to leave as they are — for example ()!? when the other symbols are going half-width.
  4. Check the highlighted changes under ③ Check and copy the result, then press Copy the result.

When is it useful?

  • Reusing an old website’s copy in a redesign, where ABC and ABC, or カタカナ and カタカナ, have crept in over the years.
  • Tidying a product list, a staff directory or a CSV column before importing it.
  • Cleaning up text pasted from PDFs, emails and spreadsheets that each used different widths.
  • Filling in a form that only accepts half-width digits or full-width katakana.
  • Checking a manuscript against a style guide before it goes to the client.

What each kind covers

Letters and digits
A–Z, a–z and 0–9, and their full-width forms ABC…123.
Katakana
Half-width katakana such as カタカナ, along with the half-width 。「」、・ and ー. A voicing mark is joined onto the kana before it, so ガ becomes the single character ガ; going the other way splits it again.
Symbols
Every other printable ASCII character — ! ? ( ) @ # & - / ~ and the rest — and its full-width form.
Spaces
The ordinary space and the full-width space. Tabs and line breaks are never touched.

What is never changed

Hiragana, kanji, emoji and line breaks pass through untouched. URLs and email addresses are kept whole, so turning everything full-width cannot break a link. When katakana goes half-width, 。「」、・ stay full-width because they are ordinary Japanese punctuation, and ー only changes after katakana — the ー in らーめん stays as it is.

Privacy and security

The text you paste stays in this tab. It is never sent to a server and it is not saved on this device either, so closing the tab clears it. Only the rules you chose are remembered on this device, so the next visit starts where you left off. The analytics record only that the tool was used and that the copy button was pressed, never the text.

Frequently asked questions

Why not one button that makes everything half-width?
Because Japanese copy rarely wants that. Half-width katakana is hard to read and breaks in some systems, while full-width letters and digits look out of place on a modern page. Choosing a direction for each kind gets the usual house style — half-width letters and digits, full-width katakana — in one pass.
Will it break URLs or email addresses?
No. An address written in half-width is left exactly as it is, even when everything around it goes full-width. A full-width address such as https://… is converted to half-width when letters and symbols are set to half-width, which is what makes it work again.
How do I keep () and !? full-width while other symbols go half-width?
Set Symbols to half-width and type ()!? into Characters to leave as they are. A character listed there is left alone in both directions.
Does it unify spellings, like サーバ and サーバー?
Not yet. This tool changes character widths only. Unifying words and spellings is a different job, planned as a separate tool.
Is my text sent anywhere or saved?
Neither. The conversion runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the text is not stored — only the rules you chose are remembered on this device.
Is there a length limit?
No fixed limit. Everything runs on your machine, so a whole site’s worth of copy converts in a moment.
